Positioning industrial PC and gateway that aggregates and computes location data at the edge

Make the IPC and Gateway the Positioning Brain of the Site — Seeking Industrial Computer and Networking Vendors to Co-Create Edge Positioning

A positioning system needs a compute node that runs continuously and sits close to the site — which is exactly what industrial computers and gateways are for. P-Square seeks IPC, gateway and edge computing vendors to co-create, putting positioning computation directly onto your existing hardware platform.

2. Industry Focus: Positioning Computation Is Moving to the Edge

From send-everything-to-the-cloud to compute-at-the-edge

Positioning data is high frequency and low in value density — every tag reports multiple signal readings per second, but what needs to be retained is the resulting position and events, not the raw signal. Running the positioning computation on a site-side edge node cuts bandwidth and cloud cost substantially, and lets alerts fire without waiting for a network round trip. That makes IPCs and gateways the natural place for positioning computation.

Three benefits of edge computation

  • Bandwidth and cost: only positions and events are uploaded, not raw signal.
  • Real-time response: geofence alerts and duress calls do not wait for the cloud.
  • Data residency: for semiconductor and healthcare environments, data can remain entirely on site.

Taiwanese vendors are strong in hardware; what is scarce is the application layer

Taiwanese industrial computer and networking vendors hold clear advantages in hardware design, certification, durability and global channels, but hardware margins keep compressing. Whether the same machine can run one more valuable application often decides product positioning and margin. Positioning is a textbook example: the hardware specification barely changes, yet the product moves from industrial computer to site positioning host.

Why positioning suits a value-add application

  • Undemanding: the algorithm runs on Linux or Windows with a quad-core CPU and 16 GB of memory.
  • Radio agnostic: BLE, Wi-Fi or UWB, selectable to match your existing product line.
  • Highly extensible: the same host can also run AI video analytics, forming a complete positioning plus video edge solution.

3. Value-Add Pain Points for IPC Vendors, and What P-Square Offers

The common question for industrial computer and gateway vendors is not whether the hardware can be built, but what the machine should run.

In the field: P-Square already co-created an RTLS solution with a major domestic industrial computer maker — their industrial PC serves as both the positioning server and the Locator, running P-Square’s positioning algorithm. The hardware and the brand are theirs; the positioning capability is ours. The partnership model described on this page is already deployed.

5. Frequently Asked Questions

What hardware specification does positioning computation require?
Windows 11 or Windows Server 2022 and later 64-bit, with Linux also supported (Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later); an Intel Core i5 12th generation or equivalent quad-core CPU and above; 16 GB of memory or more. That threshold poses no difficulty for most industrial computers, so a hardware specification change is usually unnecessary.
Our product line is gateways only, with no hosts — can we still partner?
Yes. The P-Square Locator is itself a gateway-form product, using a one-to-five extension design (one unit driving four read heads covering five points), field proven in semiconductor plants, hospitals, automotive facilities and construction sites. It serves directly as a reference product form for co-development.
Can positioning data stay entirely within the customer's site?
Yes, and this is one of the main advantages of the edge architecture. Positioning computation completes on site and only positions and events need to be uploaded; for semiconductor and healthcare environments that are sensitive about confidentiality and personal data, nothing has to leave the premises.
Can one host run both positioning and video analytics?
Yes. P-Square AI vision recognition supports RTSP IP cameras with six or more streams on a single host and outputs results as JSON over a RESTful API. Positioning and video analytics can run in parallel on the same edge host, forming a complete edge solution.
Is this a software licensing relationship?
The commercial form is open to discussion. Our basic position is that you own the hardware and P-Square provides the positioning algorithm and software, with both parties selling together or applying jointly for government grants; the specific licensing or revenue-sharing arrangement can be planned around project scale and market.
