LiDAR SLAM localises the vehicle by matching environmental contours, and does so well. But it has two structural limits: it cannot identify moving objects — it does not know whether a contour is a person or a pallet — and it is bound by line of sight, so corners and areas behind racking are invisible. For safety applications, what a vehicle actually needs is not its absolute coordinate but the bearing and distance to the nearest person.

5. Frequently Asked Questions

Our AGVs already have LiDAR SLAM and obstacle avoidance — why add UWB?
SLAM answers where the vehicle is by matching environmental contours, but it cannot identify moving objects or tell whether a contour is a person or a pallet, and it is bound by line of sight so corners and areas behind racking are invisible. UWB relative positioning fills exactly that gap: for tagged workers the vehicle measures bearing and distance directly, unaffected by lighting or blind spots. The two are complementary rather than alternatives.
Must every worker wear a tag? What about people without one?
UWB relative positioning only detects tagged personnel, so we recommend retaining the vehicle's existing LiDAR and vision-based obstacle avoidance as a second layer: LiDAR detects all obstacles while UWB precisely identifies the bearing and distance of people for earlier reaction. This is why we stress complementarity rather than replacement.
Does the site need anchors deployed?
Not for vehicle-mounted relative positioning — the anchor is on the vehicle. Fixed anchors are only needed if you also want the vehicle's absolute coordinates for fleet dispatch and heat map analysis; the two can coexist, giving absolute coordinates and relative range simultaneously.
Can you support our customers' existing AGVs from different manufacturers?
Yes. The fleet management system is designed for multi-vendor fleets and provides Web API and iframe integration with existing MES, WMS or dispatch systems.
Is this a module purchase relationship?
No. Our position is that you own the hardware and P-Square provides the positioning algorithm and software, with both parties selling together or applying jointly for government grants. The vehicle, mechanics, controller and volume manufacturing are your expertise and we do not interfere.
